Subjects offered at GCSE level are Health and Social Care, double award giving two GCSEs and GCSE Catering. For pupils starting Year 10 in September 2008 a BTEC First Diploma in Hospitality will be offered.
GCSE Double Award Health and Social Care
Comprises 3 Units:
- Unit 1 Health, Social Care and Early Years Provision
- Unit 2 Promoting Health and Well Being
- Units 1 and 2 have projects which are completed and assessed. These projects are based on looking at a chosen person for Unit 2 and 2 chosen people for Unit 1. Their lifestyle and needs are described and looked into in detail
- Unit 3 is assessed by an exam.
Common to all 3 units are the 5 client groups of Babies, Children, Adolescents, Adults and Older People. These groups physical, intellectual, emotional and social needs are looked at in a great deal of depth.
Discussion is a key part of this subject and individual viewpoints are valued. Issues that are important to today’s society are also dealt with such as alcohol, drugs, smoking, illnesses, and relationships.
It is a useful subject for any pupil to have, resulting in 2 GCSE’s but will be particularly helpful for those who have an interest in careers in the health or education or social services.
It will result in pupils having a range of different skills including independent study, investigation, team work, research, and the ability to discuss different viewpoints.
