10/11/11 - The Year 7 Football Team played its first match tonight against Monmouth Comprehensive school.  It was a tough encounter which wasn't helped by playing on an awful pitch.  Both teams started brightly and had chances to score but Abersychan broke the deadlock when Lewis Gibbs cooly slotted the ball past the keeper.  Monmouth almost scored straight away but excellent defending prevented the equalizer.  Abersychan could have doubled the lead in the second half but Monmouth's keeper prevented this saving Morgan Winstone's penalty.  Both teams continued to attack each other's goals with Thomas Gaunlett proving tricky down one wing and Ben Read and Morgan Winstone working well in the centre of the field.  Abersychan's persistance paid off when the impressive Taine Basham finished off Lewis Gibbs goal bound effort, although I'm sure both pupils will be claiming the goal.  An excellent passing move involving Ben Read, Morgan Winstone and Lewis Gibbs almost set up a third goal for Thomas Gaultlett although he couldn't quite keep the ball in play.  Chepstow did manage to score a late consolation goal that had strong suspicions of being offside but this didn't affect the result as Abersychan claimed their place in the next round where they will face Monmouth.

7/11/11 - Year 9 progress again!  The Year 9 Football team progressed to the next round of the U14 Welsh Cup after a nailbiting match against Chepstow.  Abersychan went 1-0 up early on with a goal from Liam Fears, who would have doubled the lead if his goal hadnt been disallowed.  The Year 9's continued to dominate the match and were rewarded with a second goal courtesy of Sam Watkins.  Despite controlling the game, Abersychan went into the break only 2 goals up.  They were made to pay for this straight after half time when a spirited Chepstow hit back with two goals to make it two all.  Abersychan were clearly rattled and couldnt find any form.  They were punished further when Chepstow stole a third goal with 10 minutes to go.  Fortunately, the Year 9's upped their game and began to attack.  Casey Roomus got them back on equal terms with only 3 minutes to go with a well placed penalty before Sam Watkins claimed his second to make it 4-3.  Abersychan wrapped up the match when Joel Mahoney (Year 8) chipped the keeper with a fine effort from the right wing.  A pleasing result, although too close for comfort. Good luck in the next round Year 9.

20/10/11 - Well done to the Year 9 Rugby Team who beat St. Albans 53-0.  Year 9's were dominant throughout with an excellent performance again from Jared Rosser.

19/10/11 - Congratulations to the Year 9 Football Team who made amends for last week's defeat to St. Albans by beating Liswerry 5-2 to advance to the next round of the U14's Welsh Cup.  Aberychan were staright off the mark with Fraser Henderson latching on to a goalkeeping error to score within the first 5 minutes.  Abersychan had plenty of possession but their inability to keep the ball was punished right at the end of the first half by a quick Liswerry breakaway with one of their players beating the offside trap before slotting the ball past Jack Rogers.  Abersychan responded superbly after the break, playing the ball around with ease.  Casey Roomus capped a superb performance on the wing by scoring 2 goals. Brad Baker and Llewellyn Clark each scored before Liswerry claimed a consolation goal.  Callum Bailey-Aitkin was named Man of the Match for his solid performance at right back.  Well done Year 9!!

17/10/11 - Well done to the Year 10 Football Team for advancing to the next round of the U15's Gwent Cup.  Despite blustery winds and decisions going against them, Abersychan kept their composure to record a 3-2 victory over Duffryn High School.  The wind caused problems in the first half as Aberychan were pinned back in their own half.  Despite this, they worked hard and created plenty of chances to take the lead.  Unfortunately, Duffryn used the wind to their advantage to went into half time 1-0 up.  Abersychan came out for the second half much improved, keeping their composure and passing the ball superbly.  Jamie James and Corey Watkins were superb in the centre of midfield, working tirelessly to create chances.  It didnt take long before Abersychan were on equal terms with Corey Watkins cooly curling the ball into the top corner to bring the teams level.  Abersychan continued to work hard in a tight game and their persistance paid off when Corey added a second with a fine header into the top corner.  Somehow, Duffryn fought back and were given a goal that Kyron Bould claimed had not crossed the line.  Aberychan continued to press for a winner and were rewarded when Jamie James burst into the penalty area, beating two players before cooling slotting the ball in.  They survived a very nervey and lengthy last five minutes holding on to win 3-2 and book their place in the next round.  Ben Smith was awarded Man of the Match for his excellent performance at center back. Well done!!

11/5/11  CONGRATULATIONS to Year 7 and 8 Rugby teams!!

Abersychan's Year 7 rugby team beat Monmouth Comprehensive school today in the final of the Gwent Dragons Cup at Caerphilly RFC.  Abersychan were quick off the mark scoring almost straight away when Caelen May used his speed and strength to outpace Monmouth to score the opening try.  Monmouth replied almost immediately with an unconverted try.  However, this just spurred Abersychan on and Caelen scrored another 3 tries.  Monmouth put in a gutsy performance but Abersychan's Year 7's were too strong.  Jack Skyrme powered over the line to add another try before Caelen capped an excellent performance by scoring his 5th try of the day.  Joel Mahoney converted 3 tries to make the final score 36-5.  Well done to all of the pupils who played in the final and those who played throughout the year to help them reach the final.

Year 8 were also victorious but their match proved to be much tougher.  Again, Abersychan started quickly, scoring straight from the start.  Jared Rosser collected the ball in his own half and outran his opponents to score the opener which was converted by Sam Watkins.  A resilient St. Cenydd team fought back and scored a converted try almost immediately.  Both sides battled hard but Jared again burst through to score Abersychan's 2nd try picking up a good kick from Sam Watkins.  Sam's kicking helped set up Abersychan's next try as well as the ball bounced kindly for Liam Bould to collect and score.  Sam kicked both conversions.  Despite the scoreline, the game was still close.  Jared added his 3rd try which was again converted by Sam Watkins before St. Cenydd set up an exciting finish by scoring their 2nd try.  However, Abersychan dug in and effectively ended the game by scoring a further 2 tries through Jared Rosser and Fraser Henderson.  The final score was Abersychan 38 St. Cenydd 12.  Well done Year 8!!

5/4/11 Congratulations to the Year 7 Rugby team who beat Caerleon in the semi-finals of the Gwent Dragons Cup.  The game went all the way with both teams tied on 19 all until Caelen May picked up the ball and sprinted the entire length of the pitch to score the winning try.  It could have been a different result if Owen Morgan had not ankle tapped a Caerleon player to prevent them scoring a try.  Caelen scored all four tries for Abersychan with Joel Mahoney converting 3 of the tries.  Well done and good luck in the final.
