Holocaust Memorial Day

R.E/Welsh Baccalaureate Departments Commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day

On Friday 27th January 2012, 13 pupils from Year 10 represented Abersychan School at a multi-faith service of commemoration for Holocaust Memorial Day.

The service took place at St Gabriel's Church, Cwmbran at 10.00am. The theme of the service was 'Speak Up, Speak Out' and consisted of prayers, hymns and readings in memory of victims of the holocaust and other more recent genocides. Prayers were led by Canon Brian Pippen (Rector of Pontypool), Father Tony Turner (Rectorial Benefice of Cwmbran) along with a traditional Hebrew Memorial Prayer read by Rabbi Francis Berry of Bristol and West Progressive Jewish Congregation. Blessings were led by the Bishop of Monmouth.

The service also consisted of guest speakers and music provided by Greater Gwent Strings Orchestra.

It was an extremely moving service and the pupils were a real credit to the school.

Only Men Aloud

Six members of 'Only Men Aloud' came to the school on Thursday 2nd February 2012 and took a workshop with approx 50/60 year 9, 10 and 11 boys.

'Only Men Aloud' sang to the boys (which was was outstanding), the boys sang with them and they took part in serveral confidence building/musical games which were run by 'Only Men Aloud' themselves.

The Abersychan boys throughly enjoyed this experience and as a result many pupils are now going to join 'Only Boys Aloud'.

The school would like to thank 'Only Men Aloud' for coming in again as it was an enjoyable experience that we will never forget.

Basketball Champions

Abersychan School Crowned Torfaen 5x60 U14 Basketball Champions

The team made up of pupils from years 8 and 9 went to Cwmbran Stadium on Friday 2nd December to face teams from all secondary schools in Torfaen.

In their first game they played extremely well recording a victory over Crosyceiliog. As the tournament developed the team grew in confidence winning all their pool matches against West Mon, Fairwater and Llantarnam. In the final, Abersychan would come up against a more experienced and well drilled team in St Albans.

The Abersychan team took the game to their opponents early on in the first half and managed to secure the victory with some excellent defence in the second period.

The Abersychan Squad was: Jarrad Rosser, Sam Watkins, Liam Bould, Callum Bailey-Aitkin, Fraser Henderson, Leila Thomas, Amelia Page, Kelly Mahoney, Chloe Atkinson and Rebecca Carver. Well done to you all.
