Year 9 Overview

Year 9  Key Maths

The main textbooks in use in Year 9 are :

  • KM 9³   (levels 5-8)
  • KM 9²   (levels 4-7)
  • KM 9¹   (levels 3-5)

Each textbook contains an end of chapter revision exercise, an extension exercise and a Test Yourself exercise, which the pupils use to measure their own progress and understanding of the work.

Each chapter is formally assessed using the tests from the respective Year 9 KM Question Banks. The results of these tests are recorded and accumulated to form a mean mark for the year’s work. Pupils record their marks on self-assessment record sheets and comment on their areas of success and targets for improvement.

Each lesson will have a Mental Maths element and involve a variety of Key skills. Pupils will be given formal Mental Maths tests on a regular basis, taken from the respective Year 9 KM Question Bank. These will be accumulated to form a mean mark and reported to parents’.

MA1 is an integral part of the course with mini investigations built into the work. The use of Scientific calculators is assumed throughout, though pupils will be required to work without a calculator whenever possible. Pupils should engage in at least one topic-related ICT experience during the year.

Pupils are set target levels on the basis of their academic progress in the previous year, from CAT scores and predicted KS3 levels. Pupil progress is monitored and tracked at regular intervals.

Year 9 are set on the basis of their attainment in the subject in Year 8 and on their predicted KS3 levels. The setting arrangement is reviewed at regular intervals.
