European Youth Parliament: South Wales Forum. Monday 14th March, 2011.
On 14th March, 2011, Mr Evans took 6 Year 10 Welsh Baccalaureate pupils to represent Abersychan School at the European Youth Parliament: South Wales Forum.
Ceri-Anne Boucher, Amy Jones, Danielle Mallett, Ben Storey, Olivia de Sousa Costa and Keeli Kates proposed a motion advocating religious tolerance in Europe. Ceri-Anne opened the debate and Amy made the summation speech. The other pupils helped to argue our case effectively against our opponents and our motion was carried when put to the vote.
The pupils also had to play an active role in other debates that focused on a wide range of issues relevant to the European Union such as climate change and the creation of a European army.
Although our pupils did not win the competition, they were praised by the jury for their energy and passion as well as the preparation and research that they had done. Given that the representatives from the other schools present were all Year 13 pupils, the Abersychan Team acquitted themselves admirably and stood their own in a day of fierce debating. Mr Evans was extremely proud of their maturity, eloquence and team work!
